Golden Barrel Cactus: Cold Hardy Palm Trees, Desert and Tropical Plants

Echinocactus grusonii

Echinocactus grusonii or the “Mother-in-Laws Cushion”- The Golden Barrel is one of the most common landscape cactus in the American Southwest.  The shape is round cylindrical and is an evergreen cactus.  Mature height is over 3 foot tall and requires full sun and is hardy to at least 10°F.

It flowers in the summer with bright yellow flowers surrounding the crown of the plant.  There is no maintenance on this beautiful cacti and only occasional water in drought years.  The young Echinocactus are often available on the cactus displays in garden centers. They look quite different from the mature specimens.
