A Closer Look at Agave Americana
Large, sculptural agave with dramatic blue-green leaves. Best for a large sunny bed with plenty of room for spiny mature leaves.
Each plant's mature size, cold tolerance and care can vary with its exact variety and growing site. Review our care resources and ask our team about pot sizes, winter planning and the specimen you are considering.
Architectural Form and Seasonal Growth
Agave americana forms a large, sculptural rosette of thick blue-green leaves. Give its sharp-tipped foliage plenty of room to expand, especially near patios and walkways. Mature rosettes may eventually produce a dramatic tall flowering stalk; the flowering rosette typically declines afterward.
Best Landscape Uses and Care
Use this agave as a bold focal point in a sunny, sharply drained bed or a suitably sized container. Avoid persistently wet soil, allow for its substantial mature spread, and ask about winter moisture and cold protection for your particular location.
