GROWING GUIDE

Growing Bird of Paradise in North Carolina

Place Bird of Paradise where it receives the light and warmth appropriate to its species. The South Mills climate can include freezing nights, so tropical specimens may be better grown in containers that can be moved.

For a healthy display, allow space for mature foliage and choose a soil that drains well. Ask our team whether your preferred plant is suitable for year-round outdoor planting or seasonal protection.

Where to Plant

A bright, sheltered position with enough width and height for mature leaves is usually ideal. Protect soft foliage from harsh winter wind and plan a clear route indoors for container plants.

Avoid locations that stay soggy after rain or catch water from a roof edge. Large leaves may need extra space away from fences or walkways to avoid tearing or rubbing.

Watering & Drainage

Monitor the root zone and water when the upper soil begins drying, adjusting for light, container size and season. Do not leave standing water in a saucer around the pot.

Use a fertile but freely draining planting medium. During cool periods, roots consume water more slowly, so reduce watering frequency rather than following a rigid calendar.

Cold Weather & Seasonal Care

Tropical foliage may suffer during cold snaps even when the plant survives. Before forecast frost, move manageable containers into a protected, bright area or follow nursery guidance.

Avoid applying fertilizer to a cold-stressed plant. As warmth returns, inspect new growth and resume watering and feeding gradually when active growth begins.

After-Planting Checklist

  • Confirm sunlight and mature size before planting.
  • Check drainage after rain before choosing a site.
  • Water according to the plant, season and soil.
  • Watch for unusual discoloration or stress.
  • Ask the nursery when a plant has special winter requirements.
